Failure to RecallThe past year has seen various Inquiries flitting in and out of the news feeds. "Party-Gate", the wider Covid handling, the Infected Blood scandal, or the drawn out saga of the PO Horizon scandal which has leapt to the top of public consciousness only recently thanks to a much needed TV drama. I say "much needed" as it appears the only way to focus public attention, and therefore public scrutiny, is to turn something into a drama. If one were to run an automated text analysis across the transcripts of all these inquires I suspect one phrase would crop up more often than any other."I don't recall."It has become the standard go-to answer when asked to answer a direct question about knowledge of, or potential complicity in, known failures. It has become the UK equivalent of pleading the 5th amendment for politicians and CEOs who recognise that they have a duty to answer a direct question under oath but fear self-incrimination were they to be anywhere near fully frank and open.As a stand-alone phrase it brings wistful memories of the music of my youth."I don't remember, I don't recall, I have no memories of anything at all." [PG 1980]But heard in the context of the current inquiries it simply comes across as being disingenious. Interchangeable with - "yes, I did, but I will not publicly admit it."If they were truly convinced that they were unaware then surely the answer is, "I have no knowledge of that."A litany of top politicians have all hidden behind it of late: Rishi Sunak, Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, Ed Davies, David Cameron, et al.Lord Cameron used it just the other day to deflect questions about having been briefed on Horizon back when he was PM, adding it is "hard to remember every letter and piece of paper put in front of you."I do have some small sympathy with this.We all sometimes fail to remember at times. If asked if I had seen a particular email or paper I too can question my memory. Asked where I had heard or read something I may struggle to pinpoint the exact source.BUT that is memory of detail, not memory of message.I will remember what is memorable, that which strike ME as being important. The things I feel are the stand out takeaways from any information source.Especially where it strikes me that something unjust or wrong is happening.Regardless of how much information floods in the concept of hearing about individuals' lives being devastated by knowingly contaminated blood, knowingly unsound prosecutions, and knowingly unscreened releases to care homes and NOT remembering these things is simply beyond my comprehension.Either these "responsible" people are failing to act morally to stop injustice, or they are simply unable to see untenable harm and to do the job which they are tasked with - applying scrutiny on behalf of others.Failure to recall is NOT a valid deflection. You either KNEW or you did not.And if you did NOT then why were you there? Now, where was I...?

Matthew Perry: rest in peace. The addiction that plagued his life and which he fought to overcome was tragic to read about.Addiction seems to be something that society has simply failed to get to grips with. So many lives destroyed and cut short the world over. For over a decade The British Society of Gastroenterology has been reporting on the failures of UK hospitals in treating those with liver disease and the stats are not improving. In 2013 the BSG produced a checklist that should be completed for all patients admitted with decompensated cirrhosis within the first 6 hours of admission. This checklist is still not being followed and it carries a high mortality (10-20% in hospital mortality). In a report of UK hospitals only 47% of those admitted with liver failure received good hospital care.73% of those with liver disease reported stigma about their condition.Liver disease is the only major disease wheredeath rates are rising.https://lnkd.in/ebN5YeGHhttps://lnkd.in/eaa5huVD

This is happening all the time and can relate to this article. So many of us are happily working on our careers, loving life, thinking everything will stay the same, money is coming in and we are good. It only takes a health diagnosis, like this lady, or a relationship breakdown or a job loss and you can find yourself homeless. I was lucky I had parents to move in with, however, not everyone has that option and it is not perfect. Finding my own place would have been better.Creating financial independence is so important, even more so for 50 plus women as we are more vulnerable and often overlooked. This is the reason I am creating an online income, and love that I am working with other women my age and older, as we take control of our future and create an income for life, that is not putting strain on our bodies. It gives us security and peace of mind. As we don't know what is around the corner. The time is now, while you are working, start something on the side, a few hours a week and it could make the difference between becoming homeless or keeping your home. A DEMENTED KING. THE LEGAL CASERepublicans knew from the beginning that Donald Trump was a malignant narcissistic or a sociopath, etc... but it did not matter quite the contrary. 1) Studies have been written on how useful these features were for some professions (the lack of empathy and the art to manipulate are highly valued in some fields) Besides there is never total loss of contact with reality. A sociopath understands the law. 2) besides these are "conditions" and not illnesses, an important distinction since it would be difficult to use the 25th amendment with its very lose definition of mental health.. For details read "25th Amendment: How do we decide whether the president is competent?" https://lnkd.in/e35ejDvKMuch easier would be to invoke dementia, a clear disease, easier to diagnose and follow as the patient becomes increasingly incompetent and dangerous. In the following article you will discover that the White House staff very quickly understood that the President showed all the signs of dementia "Bannon “believed Trump was suffering from early stage dementia and that there was a real possibility he would be removed from office by the 25th amendment, where the cabinet could vote that the president was no longer mentally capable of carrying out his duties.”. Potential use of the 25th amendment was widely discussed throughout the Trump administration, intensely so in the aftermath of the 6 January Capitol riot, when Trump incited his supporters to attack Congress in his attempt to overturn the election. The amendment was not invoked. Instead Trump was impeached – and acquitted – a second time." By 2020 everybody knew and everybody shut up. Why did they shut up? 1) Trump was still very useful as a demented gourou and 2) had transformed the Republican party into Trump party cult.On Sunday a timid voice was heard: Nikki Haleyon said it out “The concern I have is – I’m not saying anything derogatory, but when you’re dealing with the pressures of a presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do it.” She questioned Donald Trump’s mental fitness after he appeared to confuse her with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi when talking about the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.“Last night, Trump is at a rally and he’s going on and on mentioning me several times as to why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riots. Why I didn’t handle January 6 better. I wasn’t even in DC on January 6. I wasn’t in office then,” Haley said. But it is a timid voice and the charade will keep on , including at the Supreme Court which being above the law can pretend without battering an eye that a sane Donald Trump has the right to take the lead of the Republican party. https://lnkd.in/ecuhfzwM
