A tiffany lamp's shade is constructed piece by piece by skilled crafts-persons. Each piece of stained glass is held and soldered into place forming a delicate but sturdy structure. Just like stained glass windows as seen in churches, putting sometimes hundreds of pieces of glass together allows a wide range of beautiful tiffany designs to be created.
When the tiffany lamp is switched on, light from the light bulb shines through the colorful glass pieces and shines outward. It will light up the room but also will project colorful light patterns onto nearby surfaces such as walls. This light show adds to the spectacle. You can also turn the lamp around in order to project different aspects of the design onto nearby surfaces.
Note that since some of the light shines through the stained glass, some amount of glare from the light bulb may be visible. But often the glass pieces feature textures and variations in transparency, some being more opaque, and this along with the color in the glass helps to disperse the light.
